Schizo

Martin Horntveth aka Gouldian Finch releases new music! The album, titled 'Scizho', follows up the eclectic debut, Hatch from 2023. Although the sound and energy are recognizable, Horntveth dresses up once again in a new outfit. This time more in the direction of jazz, fusion and jazz rock.

The new album is based on the commissioned work, ‘Polaroid’, which Horntveth wrote for Kongsberg Jazz festival in 2021. And as the first single CAPS LOCK so nicely suggests, it is written in capital letters on the new album. The band consists of nine top-shelf musicians in addition to the composer himself, who in this setting functions mostly as a percussionist and band leader.

‘Scizho’ is characterized by fast shifts, tight brass and synth riffs, bass that requires goggles and, not least, smoking solos. You can really enjoy soundscapes that ooze sunglasses and headbands. Horntveth himself has described the music as "guilty pleasures" where energy, playfulness or humor are not held back. At the same time, it is melodically beautiful and delicate over the brain melting drum breaks and complex chord progressions.

This album also reflects Horntveth's broad musical interest and range of genres but this time he wanted to focus mostly on his love for jazz and jazz rock but also his love/hate relationship with fusion and funk. The multi-instrumentalist himself plays both keyboards, percussion and several other instruments on the album, in addition to programming, producing and arranging. Horntveth has chosen the musicians he had on the top of his wish list that he regularly sees live but also collaborate with in all kinds of other settings. Be it film music, dance or theater music as well as concerts with music from the debut album.

Where Gouldian Finch's debut album was a kind of bird's nest where all Horntveth's favorite genres were collected, the following albums will be more genre specific. "I have imagined that everything I love was mixed together in one big pot on my debut album, while forthcoming will be more of a deep dive. It should be as if you take out parts of the first album and spin on these elements."
